Are you Coddiwompling?

What in the world is coddiwompling? Is it some old fart walking unsteadily down the street? Maybe it could be doing something in the garden or hiking through the woods looking for some rare fungi.

How about looking for a particular type of stone or better yet singing a song off key? I looked it up and it is none of those things. The dictionary defines it as the following:

Coddiwomple (v.) To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination. Pronounced as Cod-dee-Womp-pul.

If you look on youtube you will see that all the videos are about accepting and participating in a nomadic way of life. If you think about life in general don’t we all Coddiwomple at sometime during our life.

We know vaguely where we want to go, or at least we think we do and we follow careers that we think will take us to that future destination. A lot of times, there are twists and turns that when we look back changed our life in someway or another.

Children almost always Coddiwomple. You see them heading off on adventures that have no destination, that fill them with delight as they discover new things, sights and sounds.

As an adult, have you and your spouse ever done something spontaneous. Taken off for the weekend without planning where you are staying or want to go? Was it fun having your adventure unstructured?

Robert Frost talks about Coddiwompling in one of his most famous poems. The Road Not Taken. The last couple of lines read as follows:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.
