As the Seasons Change, So Does Life

As I look out my windows, I see trees displaying beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red, filling the landscape with the colors of autumn. The falling leaves are creating a carpet that covers the green grass of summer and reminds us that winter is just around the corner.

Over the past several weeks, I have been spending time preparing my yard for the changing seasons. The flowerpots have been moved into storage in the backyard, and the awning that provided welcome shade from the hot summer sun has been taken down.

It also offered a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the summer showers as God watered the gardens and lawns. The pots out front have been replaced with pumpkins and signs proudly announcing my support for the Buffalo Bills.

The remaining plants from the porch have found their winter home in the living room, where they will rest until next summer, filling the space along the front windows with a reminder of warmer days.

There is a brisk chill in the morning air, followed by an occasional warm afternoon that temporarily makes us forget about the approaching frost and snow. It is a beautiful time of year, but it also reminds me of something much bigger: life itself.

When we are younger, we often believe our best years are still ahead of us. We make plans, pursue opportunities, build careers, raise families, and assume there will always be another tomorrow. Now, as I grow older, autumn reminds me that I, too, am entering the fall of my life.

But autumn does not mean life is ending. It simply means life is changing. Each season brings different opportunities, challenges, and reasons to enjoy what is ahead.

I will soon be teaching customer service to a local school district while teaching microeconomics, macroeconomics, project management, and operations management. I have had to learn to how to put a gender neutral program together. Thanksgiving is approaching, and Christmas will soon follow.

I also find joy in becoming a family historian, preserving stories and memories for future generations, and spending precious time with my family and grandchildren.

I cannot change the fact that autumn has arrived, any more than I can change the fact that I am growing older.

I may not be able to do everything I once did, but I can redirect my energy toward new interests, new opportunities, and meaningful experiences.

So, as the seasons change, what are you doing with this season of your life?

Are you still trying to live as though you are twenty-something, or have you begun embracing the opportunities that come with entering the third phase of life?

Remember, the best years do not necessarily have to be behind us. There is still much to learn, experience, share, and give back.

I would enjoy hearing your thoughts. Feel free to contact me. Let's make the most of the season we are living in!
