This is a conversation about finding purpose during your returning phase, the third phase of your life, and making your life significant.
The Student asked, “Master, what is more important, the Destination or the journey?”
The Master collected his thoughts and looking the young man in the eye said, “Neither.”
The student became perplexed, “How can this be master, doesn’t it have to be one or the other?”
The master smiled, “The destination implies that you have knowledge as to what is worthwhile and significant. It would represent the culmination of your efforts, fulfillment, and realization of your dreams. It implies that once you reach it there is
nothing else left in life left to seek.”
He then continued, “The journey implies that you know where you are going. While the journey will have its ups and downs, its challenges, and triumphs. It will be transformative giving us self-discovery, development of valuable life skills and personal growth."
"We will learn valuable lessons if we have our eyes open and accumulate wisdom that will shape our character and world views as we travel the path. But without a destination we are just lost in the forest wandering around.”
“On the other hand the company we keep will decide what paths we take on our journey, and what destination we will be seeking. They will pick us up when we fall down, they will provide inspiration, they will steer us back on course when we wander off course."
"They will reinforce our perspectives, values, share our growth and provide a sense of belonging. We will have lasting memories because of them. In essence, I believe it is the company you keep that provides the path you will journey on, and a shared destiny that you will seek."
"It is in this relationship that will find meaning, purpose, and the true essence of our life’s journey. Therefore, choosing your companions carefully will provide you with meaningful connections and a path to follow. It will also provide you with direction to finding purpose, meaning and the true essence of life’s journey.”
