This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to talk about community and how it affects you.
When many people retire, they lose the only community that they have known all their life. Those who they work with and clients that they deal with. They find that the world they had been building for the last 3 decades is no longer accessible. They become depressed.
Does your social life center around what work you do and who you associate with? Have you branched out before you retired to develop other interests? There is a lot you can do.
Join a Senior Citizens center, most of them follow the same guide line that AARP does. You only have to be 50 or 55 to join them. Start participating and getting to know the people there.
Genealogy, Drum exercise, chair yoga, pool, cards and a lot of them even serve hot lunches. Where else can you get a chicken breast, potato, vegetable, with a salad and dessert for $5.00.
How about doing something like joining Toastmasters and participating in the contests. They always need officers and contestants. You could always become politically active, join the local Republican or Democratic Committee.
There are social organizations like the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution. There are women’s only clubs like Zonta. You don’t have to be an extrovert to do any of these things. You just have to recognize that you need interests outside of the bowling league that your office sponsors, or only going out with the boys from the office. Having all your friends centered around your office is a problem. Once you retire you will lose contact with this group and find yourself isolated.
Being part of outside Communities is just as important as maintaining good health if you want to enjoy life for the long term. Being part of a community requires an investment of time and effort on your part and is well worth the effort.
By being part of the 2 Young 2 Retire you will be joining another community that doesn’t value you for what your career is but who you are. Recognize that you view of your self is more then just your image of your self and your job. You can also be a husband, brother, father, grandfather, friend, card player or any of 100 other people.
Join us and tell us who else you are and want to be other than what your career was. Sign up for our classes, join in the discussion and become part of our community about life after working at www.patterson2y2r.com
