This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to
talk about wellness and health.
I think back to my grandfather’s time and the idea of fitness and health. He was a one and a half pack smoker every day and his exercise was helping my grandmother with the yard by supervising me about what she wanted done.
Right after he retired from being a carpenter, he helped people like my Dad, with house additions and building cabinets or installing bookcases that they wanted. No one ever talked about going to the gym or running or exercising. That was only for those fools who had nothing better to do with their time.
Both of them would go for walks down the block to visit neighbors and they would sit out in the yard and read. That is the extent I remember them doing or talking about health and exercise.
Now, grandpa didn’t drink and was thin, but he used to save all his old cigarette butts and salvage the tobacco from them, and us kids would help if we were staying over. We would strip out the old tobacco, then mix it with new tobacco, then roll new cigarettes for the next week for him. My Mom would be furious with him because she didn’t want us doing things like that.
He lived to 73 which was considered a good old age at that time. My grandmother, who was always busy with housework, lived to sometime in her 80’s, again never exercising or worrying about diet.
My other grandfather, I never knew because he died in his 50’s with what sounded like a heart attack. He had been in charge of the Purchasing Department at Pierce Arrow and his family had been very involved in early automotive history. He experienced depression and turned to heavy smoking and alcohol, with the loss of his position at Pierce Arrow, after the company went bankrupt.
Since the 1950’s, we have learned a lot about how exercise, lifestyle, and mental state effects the health and longevity of people in the later half of their life. By being part of the 2 Young 2 Retire you will learn what these strategies are.
There are so many things you will learn that you should never run out of options. Sign up for our classes, join in the discussion and become part of our community about life after working at www.patterson2y2r.com
