Once I built A Railroad

Do you remember the song, “Brother Can You Spare A Dime?” Maybe you don’t remember the title but if I sang the following verse I bet you would remember it. It goes,

Once I built a railroad, I made it run Made it race against time Once I built a railroad, now it's done Brother, can you spare a dime?

Have you ever looked at the full version of the song? I bet not. It talks about how we all start out in life. It goes – They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob… With peace and glory ahead why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?

Many of us have followed the conventional wisdom and as we pivot to the last third of life the question arises what does our future look like? Are we going to watch inflation eat up all that we have saved?

Are we on the treadmill and looking to create a future business that may fail and eat up our retirement? Are we going to find that without work or a career we are drifting without purpose? Worse yet heading toward the poor house?

I have and I bet a lot of other people out there are having the same issues. For some it may be financial, for others financial may not be the issue, you may be feeling purposeless.

What do you tell people when you are working, enjoying a career. You state I am a lawyer, doctor, businessman, teacher, but when you retire you no longer have a position you can talk about.

It begs the question, are you retiring because society promotes this belief that you should retire at 65 from your current position? Why retire from a job you love if you are still able and enjoy doing it?

If you do retire, retire to something, not from something! I want you to make the most of the best part of your life. The question is, are you just standing in a line or are you being significant.

Last, remember life is for living and enjoying, you can’t save it up for some other time because you don’t know what the future will bring.

If you think about these changes, you will find that you will really enjoy retirement. I am here to help coach you on living life with gusto and to help you to keep moving forward with your plans on enjoying life.
