Redefining Your Retirement Path

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to

talk about What happens to your purpose when you retire.

Isn’t it funny that a person spends 30 years becoming the best that they can be in their area of expertise and finally getting to the stage you can retire. They decide to start a new business in an area they have always wanted to or they decide to play golf every day or they move to Florida to enjoy life in the sun.

But after experiencing this they find this isn’t what they wanted so they make the decision to look for part time work in your area of expertise. But they find employer’s perception of them have changed. They are no longer desirable. Its even worse if they decided to do something else for several years then decide to come back to the workforce, why?

They might be looking for Part Time, or they might not want to be tied to a 9 to 5 routine, with only two weeks vacation per year. Every application they fill out they find they are now over qualified?

I can only speculate, maybe the employers feel they have to pay you what your worth rather then what you are willing to work for? Maybe the employers feel that you will jump ship if a better deal comes along? Maybe the employers just feel guilty that a person who is qualified for better jobs is willing to work at something less full filling?

Maybe they fear that you will not embrace new technology that has replaced many of the things you used to do? I am unsure what the dynamics are but there is a definite bias against older workers. It seems irrelevant that older workers are more dependable, more task oriented, and have develop people skills that the younger generation doesn’t have.

Why is this, because they have more life experiences, they have usually been through the ups and downs in life and have fought back developing a more balanced approach. I have found many of them more reflective and more forgiving.

When you retire if you have not prepared for your transition you will retire without knowing where you are going. Keeping your finger in the labor market, whether you are in management or as a laborer will pay dividends in the future.

Keep your resume up to date and keep working your contacts. It is tough when you feel you are Too Young to Retire but employers feel you are Too Old to Hire.
