Back in ancient Greece there was a philosopher that told moralistic stories to all the adults that would listen. One such story was the ant and the Grasshopper.
A quick summary of the story is the ant works hard during the summer and the grasshopper plays around singing and fiddling all summer. When winter comes the grasshopper realizes he is freezing and starving and goes to the ants dwelling and asks to be taken in.
The ant refuses, telling the grasshopper go visit one of your other friends I only have enough for myself. This story is also in the Bible, appearing in Proverbs 6:6-11. It admonishes us to take a lesson from the ant, learn their ways and become wise.
This story speaks to me on so many levels. I liken the story to my belief that you live life in three phases, the learning phase when you are young, the earning phase in your middle years and the returning phase when you have made the transition when you are ready for your next career.
It admonishes me to be productive during my earning phase of life and if I do that I will have extra time to spend pursuing my hobbies. Even in the returning phase you still have to use the time you have productively because time is precious.
We only have a limited amount of time and money. The Bible says if you rest to long you will find poverty will pounce on you like a bandit, and scarcity will attack you like an armed bandit. There is more packed into this fable then a short blog can talk about.
