I was driving out of a parking lot the other day. Right at the entrance to the street there was a sign that said please buckle your seat belt before entering traffic.
I got thinking that's a lot like your vision and mission statement. You would never venture into traffic not knowing where you're going. How are you going to get there or what route you are going to follow.
You also have to know what the traffic laws are, and what are the rules of the road. This is your vision and mission statement for your company. Your vision is your destination, it's where you want to go. The mission statement is what rules you're going to follow to get there, and your plan is how you are going to achieve what you want.

Will there be construction and detours. Are you going to run into snow storms, flooded roads may be a parade. Having a mission and vision statement will get you back on track when you encounter these detours and problems.
Where you are going is something you always think about before you start driving on a trip, even if the trip is only to the drugstore. It's the same with your business.
Your vision and mission will tell you where you are going and what rules you will follow. Your business plan will tell you how you are going to it. Yes you will encounter problems, but following the plan will help you refocus and keep you on track.
If you don't have a good vision or mission your employees don't know where your plans are taking them and are likely to go off on tangents that don’t necessarily help you. Do you need help in exploring what your company’s original vision was and how to follow it?
I give seminars on creating or revisiting what your companies vision is and how to use it to craft your mission statement and your business plan on where you want to go.
