The Space Between the Notes

I was wondering about the different sayings and were they come from and mean. One that I heard the other day was, “Anyone can play the notes, it’s the space between the notes that makes the music.”

When I checked out this saying I found it was attributed to Achille-Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) who was a French composer, prominent in the style commonly referred to as Impressionist music. I found that Mozart also made a similar comment which went: "The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between."

Two of the great composers recognized that even though you may be a great player of notes, if you don’t know how to space them you will never have music. I believe this is called rhythm.

I got wondering if life isn’t sometimes like that. We all know how to work hard, we all have dreams, passions, goals and hopes. What would the spaces be? Are we paying enough attention to them?

We have all gone through transitions. Probably several hundred by the time you turn fifty. I would like to think the transitions are the spaces between the notes of our lives. Most are small maybe not even noticeable.

There is the transition from crawling to walking, and when you were weaned from feeding on a bottle to eating solid food. How about later in life, graduating from grade school to middle school or moving to Senior high. At the same time, you went through the transition of puberty and became a man or woman.

What do you think your spaces were? What did you did you do when your spaces appeared. Usually, they indicate that you are making a change in your life. Are you making the most of the space you experience when you turn 50? It is a time of great transition that most people don’t even stop to ponder.

How about you? Are you and your wife paying attention to the space between having the family at home and being an empty nester? Are you thinking about the space between your existing career and your next career?

If not come and join the conversation. We have all experienced transitions, and they can lead you the best time of your life.
