This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young to Retire”. Today, we are continuing to talk about taking care of ourselves when it is cold outside.
The first thing is to start preparing for winter in the spring. Get out and walk, work out with weights or swim. When winter comes and you need to pick up that shovel you want to be fit and able to do it. In other words keep yourself fit. Not one of the statics that occupy the emergency room because of a heart attack.
The east is experiencing a major winter storm today and the plains states have another cold front moving across them. Before the storms hit take care to assess what you have around. What do I mean by that?
It’s a good time to prepare for a power outage, make sure you have new batteries in your flashlight, and that it is easy to find, and it works. Find your candles and set them out with matches or a grill lighter next to them. Then if the power goes out your not in the dark. That grill lighter is also a good back up if you have a gas stove. You can light the burners when the power is off.
Dig out your blankets and have them handy, then if the heat goes off you can stay warm. Having some sweaters handy is also a good idea. What do you need to do next. Check your pantry. If the power goes out you want to leave your freezer closed so the food doesn’t thaw. Have some other food available. Even if it is only peanut butter and jelly.
Don’t forget your pets. Do you have a weeks’ worth of food in the house for them? Set up a plan B for walking them in case you get stuck away from home. That takes me on to cars.
Do you have a shovel, blanket, and spare set of warm gloves in it? You should also carry something even if it is only candy so you aren’t starving if your car gets stuck on the road. Speaking from experience it can be a long wait for that tow truck to show up and rescue your butt when it is freezing rain and snow that are falling on you. It means that there are a ton of other people in your shoes and you will have to wait your turn.
Being aware of the weather and what it can bring will make your life more comfortable and enjoyable. That is sort of like life, you will not always have easy sailing, so look at the storms that may come your way and think about how you can prepare for them.
