What your vision can deliver

One of the words that people often misunderstand is vision. Many think of vision as something abstract or mystical, a dream that may or may not ever become reality. In business and in life, however, vision is much more practical.

It is the ability to see what could be and then inspire others to help make it happen.

The Ride for Roswell is a perfect example of how one person's vision can transform an entire community.

The event began in 1996 after Mitch Flynn, owner of the Buffalo advertising agency Flynn & Friends, met Katherine Gioia, a four-year-old girl being treated for a rare form of cancer at Roswell Park. Katherine passed away less than a year after her diagnosis, leaving a profound impact on Flynn.

Following Katherine's death, her mother, Anne Gioia, and her aunt, Donna, established the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation to support cancer research and patient care.

Flynn volunteered with the foundation and proposed an idea that was both simple and ambitious, a community bicycle ride that would raise money while bringing people together around a common purpose.

The first Ride for Roswell attracted 986 cyclists riding three routes and raised more than $100,000. While those numbers were impressive, the organizers quickly realized they had created something much larger than a fundraising event.

The Ride became a place where cancer survivors could celebrate life, families could honor loved ones lost to cancer, patients could find hope, and thousands of people could unite behind the goal of ending cancer.

More than thirty years later, that original vision continues to grow. Today, the Ride features nine routes ranging from 4 to 100 miles, attracts more than 6,000 cyclists, and is supported by approximately 1,500 volunteers who help organize a weekend-long celebration.

In 2026 alone, the Ride raised a record $6.3 million, bringing its lifetime fundraising total to nearly $93 million for cancer research and patient care. None of this happened because someone had unlimited resources or a detailed master plan.

It happened because one person saw a possibility, acted on it, and inspired others to join the journey. What vision do you have? What problem are you passionate about solving?

You may never know how many lives you can change until you take the first step toward turning your vision into reality. I work at "Helping leaders turn vision into action and mission into results." If you need business advice, contact me at bobchuckpatterson@yahoo.com.
