Why is a Vision Important for a Company

Webster's Bible Translation Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Many people have no idea what their companies vision is or if it even the company has one. Why is vision important and who cares about it anyway?

Vision is important because it conveys the goal that the founder have for the business. It focuses on the problem you are solving and the solution you areproviding in a succinct and easily understood sentence. It is your long term end goal and everything you do works toward that purpose.

It does not tell your approach on achieving it in the next three months or years. It does not address how you are going to achieve it, or what you are going to do. That is your mission statement.

Its not the map of what you are specifically going to do for the next three years that is your plan. Its not the 60 second blurb on what you company does, and how it does it. That’s your elevator speech.

All of those are important at some point in your planning and marketing process. They do not tell you or your employees what the companies end game is.The vision provides a shining star for you to follow every time you have to make a decision as to what is the direction you should take.

It reconnects you to the original vision and path when everything seems to be falling apart. It provides that guiding beacon when you have to make changes because the market you operate in has changed.

My company’s original vision was that we were the best specialty contractor in Western New York. Our mission was to address the needs of the local plants civil construction needs.

We did railroad maintenance and concrete restoration using Gunite. When our market changed, we could have gone out of business like many of the local firms did. We could have become general contractors or attempted to like many firms did.

We choose instead to stay true to the original vision and expand the distanced we traveled, added additional services using our expertise with gunite to add a pool division. We explored product lines that fit within our vision.

Is your company struggling with where to go and how to get there? Maybe you need to revisit your vision statement and see if your mission statement and plan are in sync.
