Work and You

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

This is a membership Morsel from “Too Young To Retire”. Today’s talk is about work and it is one of the five areas that “Too Young to Retire” addresses.

Most people work during the second phase of their life for 30 or more years. A lot do not have the job of their dreams, and they would not hesitate to give up if something better came along because it is not something they are passionate about.

What if you did fall into that group that is passionate about your job? You do not want to retire? Is it OK to keep working till you are 70, 75 maybe 80? Of course, it is! Maybe your company has a forced retirement policy when you reach 65. This was a big thing back in the 70’s and was pushed by the government to open up more jobs for those

that were coming into the workforce.

It was one of those strange things where you couldn’t discriminate if someone was over 50 when it came to promotions and job placement but reach 65 and you were out whether you wanted to be or not. Many companies have rescinded those policies recognizing that older members still have a lot to offer.

In “Too Young To Retire” we seem to be talking about leaving the old profession behind and creating a new one. While it may sound like we are pushing you to find a new occupation this is not so. It was not the intent to imply that your original occupation should be discarded.

Many people though can’t continue with their original occupation because it is too dangerous, to physically demanding, or they don’t want to be locked into a 9 to 5 routine and only allowed 2 to 3 weeks to vacation. These people want to rethink what is a good occupation they could look for and enjoy.

So, when we talk about you needing a new reason to get up in the morning, it is because a large number of people need that push. They need to think about what they are passionate about and what piques their interest. They need to look at not what interested them yesterday but what is it that drives them today.

Live life with gusto and keep pushing forward with your plans on enjoying life. Work or career decisions affect this feeling and “Too Young to Retire” is here to help you make that decision.
