There is a piece on the internet called “A Hopi Elder Speaks” and it is about the struggle some of us experience as we age. I have been struggling with the issues that are talked about.
As an engineer and being raised in America I was brought up with several ideas that made life easy in the Earning phase of my life.
The first was that as an engineer I always had to have solutions to any problems that were brought to me. I would listen, ponder and render how to solve the problem. I could not understand how others couldn’t embrace the solution I proposed.
As an American Capitalist I had ideas of success installed in me. That the pursuit of money, fame, and power or some combination was the goal to be pursued.
In the Hopi Elder piece, he talks about aging and being in the eleventh hour and how things have to change. That those who don’t are like the people in a fast flowing river trying desperately to hold onto the shore.
The river knows its destination and that we must let go and push off to the middle of it. We must keep our eyes open and heads above water and see where it takes us.
The Elder says we must not take anything personally least of all ourselves. It is time for us to speak our truth, create our community and be good to each other.
I am now at a place where I am moving from the earning phase of my life to the returning phase, where I want my life to be significant. I am working at making the shift from Capitalist to “Other” which I will define in later blogs.
I am looking to banish the word struggle from my vocabulary. I have gained experience, prospered, suffered and had trials and grown immensely during my life. I have become less self centered and looking to find a way to serve others through letting go.
If you think about these changes, you will find that you should really enjoy retirement. I am here to help you live life with gusto and to help you to keep pushing forward with your plans on enjoying life.
