Advent Week 3 It’s A Dark Season

Last week I talked about advent being a period of waiting. Which it is. It is a period in the Christian life of waiting for the Christ Child to be born. But what if you are not deeply religious or you have a different faith?

It can still be a dark season, not only because of the short days and dreary weather but also in brings to the forefront any relationships that you have an issue with. What does that have to do with retirement?

My blog is about not retiring from life but transitioning to a new purpose. This is extremely hard if your struggling with a broken relationship, lost love one or feeling isolated at this time of year.

This came to the fore front after I sent out my Christmas cards and went caroling with my church. I encountered friends who should have been celebrating their senior years were struggling with separation and divorce (at age 73), a spouses death, or the thought of having Christmas dinner by themselves.

I know of two spouses who are struggling with major needs because they are becoming the primary care givers of spouses with dementia. I have a friends who feels she has been cheated because the retirement hoped for is now a dream.

What are the issues? You name it, finances, mental health, divergent interests, and demands from family and children. The merry music, and overt commercialism only make the problem bigger.

There is no Santa Claus that is going to arrive will millions of dollars on December 25th to change the direction of your retirement. There is no God that will miraculously change any ones life just because it is Christmas Day.

A person needs to recognize that life may shit at the moment but good times are coming if you look forward and don’t dwell on the past. Do I have issues and the answer is yes. I will not let my arthritic bum knee define my retirement. I have too much to do and things to see.

One of these is getting my course site up and running. I will be doing testing on my site to make sure all the parts are working this week and I will let you know if any of you want to join me then in development and design.

I will keep you abreast as to how the process goes. If you want to participate in this process and join my first class please send me an email to www.bobchuckpatterson@yahoo.com
