Advice from a 100 year old

This excerpt is from an article in The Washington Post on January 21, 2025. The publication interviewed a 100-year-old man about his advice on the stages of life. Here’s what he shared:

"Enjoy the simple things in life—a ripe piece of fruit, the warmth of the sun on your skin. I’m sure a gentle breeze and a cold drink would make the list, too.

Find shared interests with your spouse. When you first got together, you likely went on dates, played tennis, or explored flea markets. Don’t stop doing those things, because one day, you may no longer have the chance.

Many couples grow apart because they stop putting in the effort to make each other happy. Say yes to new experiences. My late wife and I did, and through that, we met a group we called the POETS—short for Patterson, Okowski, Erickson, and Toal.

When I lost my wife, this group helped me re-engage with life. Now, we’re doing the same for another member who recently lost a spouse, making sure she doesn’t retreat from the world.

Another lesson I’ve learned: You can’t go through life trying to do everything alone. Join groups that provide you with a ‘third space’—a place beyond work and home where you can socialize and contribute to others.

I stay active in my church, Toastmasters, and Rotary Club—three very different, yet wonderful, communities. My current spouse and I have built a life filled with purpose, friendship, and joy, and we look forward to the years ahead.

Keep active and give back to he community. I do that by teaching at two local junior colleges. The students keep you on your toes and you get a fresh perspective on life every time you interact with them.

What about you and your spouse? Are you working on that relationship to keep it fresh and exciting? If you have struggled with this question and others then go to Patterson2Y2R,com/blog should be a place you should visit to share your stories and challenges.

I have an ear that would love to hear your stories. Let’s taste the real meaning of life. I am still working on my course with the goal of launching a starter course, and I will keep you abreast as to how the process goes.

If you want to participate in this process and join my first class please send me an email to bobchuckpatterson@yahoo.com
