“Live life in Crescendo” didn’t start out the way I was expecting. He talks about the mid-life crisis many people go through sometime between their 40th and 60th birthday.
My wife’s solution for mine was a 2000 Cinnamon colored BMW Z3. Covey talks about a friend whose Dad ended a marriage after many years with children still in their teens and who ran off with someone 17 years younger.
I just had a friend in his early 70’s who just got divorced after 42 years of marriage and now 3 grown children. He is now with a new girl friend who is a good 10 years younger.
We will explore that dynamic later, but Covey goes on to talk about a character in a movie whose name was George Baily and who lived in a little town called Bedford Falls. He was despairing because he felt his life didn’t have any worth.
It took an angel of the Lord to convince him that he had made a huge difference in the town he lived in, and he asked to have his life back. Are you despairing that your life has not made a difference?
Covey goes on with a management exercise where you write your obituary. Nobel of the Nobel prize was one of the few people who read his obituary and it changed the direction of the returning phase of his life.
Can you write your obituary and would you be proud of it? Would it show how you lived your beliefs and values, your commitment to family and those around you? Do you know the movie I was talking about?
Covey’s thoughts are that we need to redefine success and not worry if we meet the definition of the world. We should instead work toward being a significant influence for good in the world.
Try writing yours obituary and see if you need a course correction.
Have you picked up the book “Live Life in Crescendo” by Covey and Haller and are you reading it? See you next Tuesday.
I am still working on my course, and I will keep you abreast as to how the process goes. If you want to participate in this process and join my first class please send me an email to www.bobchuckpatterson@yahoo.com
