More on the Third Space

In the book “The Third Space” the author makes a lot of good points. Social media makes our lives busier, but it obscures our relationship with other people.

When we recognize dangers to our physical bodies we acknowledge them and make changes to address the issues. What happens though when our spiritual and social needs go unmet?

When we struggle with purpose and do not have true friends? He argues that we have not taught our kids the internal disciplines such as philosophy, religion, literature and arts where the focus is dealing with our internal world.

Areas like STEM fields and professional fields like law, business, health care are all about dealing with the external world and don’t give us a basis to fall back on. Our emotional lives are bound to closely with the world outside our heads.

We can feel we don’t have control over our lives. It is only in being present in society that we learn the virtual of character traits. It is through a robust network of mutual accountability where we learn patience, justice, and love.

He feels that previous generations did these things out of necessity, but technological advances have placed us in a position where we must now do it intentionally and with purpose.

Third places are destinations, not hangouts, and are optimized for social interaction. They create social capital for those who visit them. He says that they are more than places for just positive leisure.

They are also where we meet each other, exchange gossip, share ideas, and build trust. Places that are the birth place of creativity and collaboration. What are your third places?

If you have struggled with this question and others then go to Patterson2Y2R,com/blog should be a place you should visit to share your stories and challenges.
