Resume vs Eulogy Virtues

I read a book by David Brooks called a “The Road to Character” which had me thinking about what I value. His point was there are two types of Virtues.

First is called Resume Virtues and the Second is called Eulogy Virtues and he asks the question which are you more concerned with. Resume virtues are those virtues that most people think about and concentrate on.

It focuses on highlighting your skills, promoting your successes and talking about your accomplishments. This is the thing that most people spend all their time on because it’s what they feel will get them ahead and make them successful.

This is the area most people are concerned about because everything is either pressing or urgent.

The second virtue is your Eulogy virtue. These are the things people will miss about you when you pass away. Eulogy virtue is what he believes paves the road to good character.

These are the beliefs and acts that look beyond yourself & your own needs, desires & reputation. This refers to people who are looking out for other people pouring out love for others.

He had 9 items that he believed makes for Eulogy virtues. These include the following: Goodness – not what is right but what is good. Faithfulness – being true to your word, a yes is a yes and a no is a no.

Gentleness – Helping to elevate others and not oppose them. Self-Control – working to make good choices for the day. Transformation - Inviting your transformation into your soul.

Showing Love to others – because the world is so full of anger and darkness. Joy – That you are overflowing with blessings for others. Peace – turn your anxieties over to God.

And last Patience – Showing Gods grace to everyone you meet. I will see you all again on Tuesday. If you have struggled with this question and others then go to Patterson2Y2R,com/blog should be a place you should visit to share your stories and challenges.
