What difference a year makes

I had blogged about my knee replacement last April and just had my one year check up on it. The doctor was very happy with what I could do and where I was with my knee.

I am still not perfect and I am still working to get my knee stretched so I can get back to normal. If you read my blog, you will remember I had my surgery on a Wednesday, stayed over night in the hospital and Thursday went to a rehab place for two weeks.

I didn’t get any rehab till the following Monday. After two weeks I could walk with a walker, go up and down stairs, get into and out of bed and quickly graduated to a cane. Went to rehab for out patient for many months to get to 105 deg bend.

Other people I knew who had knee surgery were still struggling with getting even close to measurement. Fast forward to today. I have another friend who had his knee done 10 days ago.

He had home therapy. While I was still hobbling with a walker and having a person walk with me to  the bathroom and therapy, because it was the protocol, all he had was his wife at home and was getting home therapy.

The new protocols ae very aggressive. The Therapy he said brought him to tears everyday. He said this prayer each morning and it went, “God if you are gong to take me, take me before therapy not after.”

The aggressive Therapy worked great though. He showed up at church 10 days after his operation walking with a cane. He was slow but doing OK, was able to sit in a pew sitting like a normal person.

He was able to stand up and sitting back down for hymns and other parts of the service. I was amazed at how fast and far he has gone in just 10 days. He has a 106 deg bend in his leg and that took me several months.

Its amazing how fast the recovery is from just a year ago. It gives me hope when I have to have my other knee done. He has successfully made the transition to dealing with his new knee in record time.

I am jealous of him at his progress and happy that it is going so well for him. He had a purpose and goal to get back to normal as fast as possible and he is accomplishing that. He was just released to drive a car (that took six weeks for me to get that clearance.)

He had drive, and purpose and he will be back to normal maybe before I am back to normal. Are you struggling with a transition? Do you have purpose?

I have an ear that would love to hear your stories. Let’s taste the real meaning of life.
