Purposeful Retirement Inspired by Psalm 92:14
“They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.” (Psalm 92:14)
If you read the Bible, you’ll find verses that flip the modern narrative of retirement—especially the version shaped by the Roosevelt Era during the New Deal.

That era painted retirement as a time to step aside, sit on a porch in a rocking chair, and quietly fade away, as if your usefulness had passed and it was time to make way for younger generations.
But the Bible tells a different story. In Scripture, "retirement" from your current role in life is not an ending, but a new beginning. It is a season ripe with opportunity—a time to give more, explore long-held passions, and make a deeper impact.
Many of fellow retirees wrestle with a loss of identity after leaving the workforce, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You still have purpose. You still have potential.
This is the perfect time to mentor younger generations, volunteer, pursue long-postponed dreams, or even launch something new. Purpose fuels the soul, and when your purpose is aligned with your heart, it brings life and vitality.
The Psalms speak of being "fresh and green," a phrase that, to me, symbolizes continued vitality—not just physical, but mental, emotional, and spiritual. You can maintain curiosity and embrace lifelong learning.
Stay socially connected and spiritually rooted by joining community groups, cultivating healthy habits, and engaging in prayer and meditation.
Retirement isn’t about withdrawal or decline—it’s a gateway to a new, fruitful season. So as you plan for retirement, don’t just plan to rest. Plan to grow. Plan to give. Plan to stay fresh and green in every season of life.
