National Quitter’s Day

Did you know that National Quitter’s Day is generally observed on the second Friday in January. This year it fell on January 9th. This “holiday” isn’t official in a legal sense — it’s a cultural observation based on patterns of when people stop keeping their resolutions, not something formally recognized by governments.

If you made New Years Resolutions and have kept them congratulations. If you have fallen by the wayside don’t despair. Changes happen incrementally and must happen intentionally.

Did you know that to change something three things have to happen. A cue, which is a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode. This could be a time of day, emotion, location, people.

A Routine which is the behavior itself. That is what you do, whether it is physical, mental or emotional. Reward you give yourself, which is the benefit your brain gets, which reinforces the habit.

Maybe its giving yourself permission to take half an hour to read or walk around the block or some other activity you don’t take time to do. Charles Duhigg wrote a book on it called “The power of Habit: Why we do what we do in life and business.”

When you decide to create a new habit more than likely you have to divest one which is where the tricky part comes in. A lot of us are so locked into our routines that we don’t know what to divest so the new routine will prosper.

That’s why I tell you it is incremental. You have to Keep getting back on the horse so to speak when you fall off it. You have to keep pushing forward where you want to go. I know I have this same problem with new ideas of what I need to change and how to do it.

My resolutions are to exercise in someform(watercise) 3 times a week for one hour, make my blog / speaking career a priority, and to be the best teacher for my 3 classes at local colleges. I only choose 3 because I am having enough issues trying to keep all three. How are you doing with your resolutions?
