This is part of my ongoing series on building a rewarding and legacy-focused retirement. Each week, I explore one of nine key areas to help you design a retirement rich with purpose, joy, and meaning.
Last time, we introduced the series, today, we’re talking about one of the most important foundations of all, health and wellness. Without your health, it’s difficult to fully enjoy any of the other opportunities retirement offers.

When I first retired, my spouse and I traveled often—Cancun, Alaska (twice), the Western Mediterranean, and a New England cruise. But last summer, my wife faced lingering health issues from chemotherapy she’d undergone years earlier.
We decided to stay closer to home so we could be near a U.S. hospital if needed. Our only trip was a week in the Berkshires, and I used my semester break to get my other knee replaced.
We both have health challenges now, but we’re hopeful for future travel. In the meantime, I start each morning with prayer and meditation, attend water aerobics three times a week, and walk a “grand puppy” several times a week, a half a mile in the heat, six miles when it’s cooler.
If that’s not your style, try yoga, tai chi, Pilates, gardening, nature walks, or even “drum fitness” at a senior center. Pickleball is booming, and the YMCA offers everything from chair yoga to treadmills.
The key? Keep moving. Staying active boosts your body, your mood, and your ability to enjoy life. Your health is the foundation on which the rest of your retirement is built.
Protect it, invest in it, and you’ll be able to fully embrace the adventures ahead. Next week, we’ll explore creative pursuits, how doing what you love can add color, joy, and even a little extra income to your retirement.
